From knitting, sewing and papercraft to clay making, Britain truly rediscovered the power of making during the COVID-19 pandemic and we became a nation of avid crafters.
As restrictions start to ease and the world gets back to some sort of normality, Hobbycraft anticipates Brits will continue their crafting passions as it was revealed in a customer survey, over half (56%) of customers took up crafting because it felt good for their wellbeing, and 42% said it took their mind off other things. As lives get busier again, Hobbycraft is encouraging people to still take five minutes out of their day to do some crafting, as the conversation around the benefits of crafting on mindfulness and mental health continues to grow.
Hobbycraft data shows that in the 2021 lockdown (lockdown three), compared to first, customers grew in confidence when it came to crafting, with even more customers challenging themselves with more advanced crafts and projects.
Tie dye, diamond painting and paint by number were among the most popular crafts in lockdown one, which are seen as easier and simpler crafts, whereas, in lockdown three, more challenging and traditional crafts became even more popular. In the last three months compared to the same time last year, searches increased for Macrame (+789%), Crochet (+733%), Sewing (+244%), Embroidery (+700%) and Clay (+758%) on the Hobbycraft Ideas Hub.
Katherine Paterson, Customer Director at Hobbycraft comments: “It’s great to see people rediscover the power of making and how customers have grown in confidence with the projects they are taking on. In the first lockdown we saw a surge in demand for all things crafts but over time and more specifically in the last lockdown, it is tradition and more technical crafts that have been the most popular with customers. As lives get busy again, we anticipate the demand for craft will continue as customers understand the benefits of taking time out and find new opportunities to craft including summer projects and special occasions like weddings and parties.”
Hobbycraft is continuing its mission to ‘Get Britain Making’ with thousands of projects on its Ideas Hub and digital workshops with experts and Artisan colleagues.
