There’s something for everyone in the vast world of art, and these crafts aren’t just hobbies – they’re also art.
No one is arguing that being home isn’t the pits lately but it doesn’t mean that everything there should be boring and redundant. Many people found the joy of arts and crafts throughout the previous year, and while this might sound like a kindergarten itinerary or something that would be done during the summer at your grandparent’s house, crafts are not what they once were. In fact, they’re far better.
Now, embroidery can be done with the fine finesse of adding expletives and crocheting can be used to create three-dimensional figures. Knitting has been transformed into a way to knit oneself a new wardrobe and art is abstract, unique, and flows with creativity. It almost wouldn’t do the modern-day arts and crafts world justice to simply call it ‘arts and crafts’ but rather just ‘art.’ So, if you’re looking to pick up a new creative hobby and you haven’t put that first foot forward in the last year, consider this winter your chance to do so. There’s nothing like welcoming spring and – hopefully – a year full of vaccinations – with a new hobby and one that you can throw your own personal spin on.
Embroidery
A hobby that was once popular decades and decades ago, and started out as a way to fix clothing, is now coming back in full force. People are taking this craft and turning it into something abstract and freehand, with pieces of cloth being used to send a message and appeal to anyone’s aesthetic. Entire embroidery kits can be found all over Etsy, complete with everything you need to create a new wall hang or a piece to stitch to your clothing or a dishtowel.
Pottery
There’s a common misconception that doing pottery requires the use of a kiln and special products. While pottery classes do offer access to all of these things, there are also plenty of clays out there that don’t require a whetstone, special table, or a specialized oven. Clay work is as simple as taking what’s in your head and transforming it into a three-dimensional shape and while it might take some time, it’s a lot of fun to play with – and it’s also therapeutic.
Woodworking
Woodworking can including something as complex as a shelving unit or as simple as whittling. While neither of these is necessarily ‘simple,’ there are projects for beginners that include tools and instructions that teach a person specific techniques and methods. Carving wood is a hobby as old as time – and was once a survival skill – so it may only feel natural to try your hand at this ancient skill.
Miniature Models
Miniatures give way to a wide array of benefits from feeling accomplished over piecing a realistic, non-life-sized building together, to using paints and other mediums to make it resemble the idea you had in your head. These are a sub-category of models and the interest in them has skyrocketed in recent years, especially with architecturally-accurate designs and paints that encompass a wide array of colors.
Jewelry Making
If you’re looking for something to make you feel and look good, jewelry-making is a hobby that keeps many people busy. From earrings to rings and bracelets and everything in between, adding your own touch to a special, one-of-a-kind piece boosts the wearer’s confidence and, you never know… Someday a business proposition might come from it.
Candle And Soap Making
There aren’t many things that are more therapeutic than spending hours around good-smelling essential oils and that’s exactly what will happen with candle and soap making. Blend your own scents, cater to your own aromatic needs, and provide gifts for family and friends – however you do it, this kind of at-home spa therapy is affordable and smells great.
Crocheting
Anything from beanies to crop tops and even blankets could be all use with the help of one crochet needle and some yarn. There are plenty of YouTube tutorials that will help beginners learn the most important stitches and once you have that down, the sky is truly the limit.
Paint By Numbers
Painting is a hobby that many have found during the lockdown and it’s allowed them to express themselves on a canvas when traveling has not been an option. While painting landscapes of mountains and seaside escapes might not be something everyone is interested in, paint by numbers makes it incredibly easy to create all kinds of masterpieces. Watercolor is another medium to explore if you’re a fan of abstract and free-flowing designs, while acrylic painting is great for those with specific visions and bold designs.
