Fashion followers have witnessed an unprecedented number of viral crochet moments in the Covid era. Harry Styles’s rainbow cardi from JW Anderson caused a veritable TikTok frenzy, while Memorial Day, the humble crochet hat brand backed by Rihanna and Dua Lipa, prompted the rise of woven headgear. The latest star to join the ranks of celebrity crochet enthusiasts? Actor Michael B. Jordan.
While Team GB hero Tom Daley famously knits his own rainbow sweater vests, Jordan’s jazzy crochet shirt is not his own lockdown handiwork. Valentino’s Pierpaolo Piccioli is behind the actor’s summery staple, part of look 25 in the Italian designer’s spring/summer 2021 show. The louche shirt is spun from 5-gauge 100 per cent cotton, and decorated with embroidered floral appliqués and striking black buttons.
The piece made its debut amidst a plethora of crochet Valentino styles. A thick black crew neck, brown crochet dress and a cropped jumper featured in the womenswear offering, while open knit brown separates cropped up in the men’s range.
While the shirt was seen on the runway unbuttoned with a white tee, brown shorts, pulled-up socks and white sneakers, Jordan gave the woven bowling shirt his own twist, pairing it with brown chinos and hypebeast-approved Air Jordan x Travis Scott 1 Low OG “Dark Mocha” sneakers.
This isn’t the first time the actor has been seen in trophy knitwear. Back in May, he sat alongside Drake at the Golden State Warriors Vs Los Angeles Lakers game wearing a Dior Oblique cardigan, styled with camo trousers and trainers.
